Producer Akshay Kumar’s ‘Oh My God’ is based on a Gujrati play ‘Kanji Virrudh Kanji’. It has also taken elements from Paresh Rawal’s Hindi play ‘Krishna vs Kanhaiya’. The film is refreshing in its approach and has featured a new idea. However, this is not the only reason to watch the film.
1. Central idea: Kanji Bhai becomes a complete non-believer after a mishap. He decides to demand compensation from the god in order to run his family. Basically, he becomes a party in a court battle against the god. Even the court doesn’t know what to do with his claims.
2. Paresh Rawal: Though the film is based on his play, still he was needed to enact Kanji Bhai with all his innocence on screen. The actor does it effortlessly. He holds the entire film together without being overshadowed by the presence of a big star like Akshay.
3. Mithun Chakraborty: He is in a never seen before kind of a role. Not everyone had expected Mithun to play such a layered character in ‘Oh My God’. He evokes laughter and repulsion at the same time. His body language speaks of his vast experience as an actor. Whenever he is on screen, you don’t need to see anywhere else for entertainment.
4. Akshay Kumar and his little Krishna quirks: He rides a heavy bike, talks about uploading photos on Facebook and wears wooden slippers. Akshay actually looks cool, calm and composed in the film. He is stylish, suave and naughty. His witty reactions to one liners are a treat to watch in the film.
5. Art direction: Set designers have taken care of small details. Modern day Krishna swirls key ring in place of ‘chakra’, Paresh Rawal’s idol rests on a scooter model, and the god has a number plate with ‘Om’ written on it.
6. Writer’s smartness: Bhavesh Mandalia and Umesh Shukla have created some scintillating moments with the help of their writing. Court room scenes form a major chunk of the film, and none of these scenes look dull. The dialogue given to Paresh Rawal are so apt that one easily gets engrossed in the film.
7. Prabhudeva’s dancing: His dancing doesn’t need any introduction. Though Sonakshi Sinha looked in difficulty while matching steps with Prabhudeva, still ‘Go go Govinda’ emerges as a foot tapping number.
